Our Story

The Gallery @57 emerged out of an exciting series of popups that originally began in 2016. The question, “What if a gallery could be in an empty storefront on Main Street in Malden?” rallied a surge of energy to raise the shop from scratch in two weeks. Over the Christmas season, it generated $15,000 in revenue in 11 business days. In a community that had no arts retail, this inspired the entire community, including residents, business owners, city leaders, and the Mayor of Malden.

In 2017-2018 the same artists pulled together a longer term popup that ended up lasting over one year thanks to the generous donation of space from DSF Advisors LLC and tireless energy of several artist volunteers.

When the free lease ended at the end of 2018, many people were saddened. But a few knew that the foundation of generosity, creativity, and power of community through arts would prevail and sustain a longer term, more permanent version of The Gallery.

The Gallery supporters Mayor Gary Christenson and Strategic Business Development Officer Kevin Duffy worked hard to create an opportunity for this future. In July 2019, the opportunity became reality as a lease was signed for the space at 57 Pleasant Street, right in the heart of major transformation that Malden Center is undergoing.
